<p><strong>Rita Uguamaye</strong>, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member popularly known as <strong>Corper Raye</strong>, has petitioned President <strong>Bola Ahmed Tinubu</strong> over what she calls an “unlawful and politically motivated” extension of her service year.</p>

<p>She submitted the petition through her lawyer, <strong>Inibehe Effiong</strong>, accusing NYSC officials of abuse of power and victimisation.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Petition</h2>

<p>The document, titled <em>“Appeal Against the Unlawful Extension of the Service Year of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye with State Code Number LA/24B/8325,”</em> explains her case.</p>

<p>Uguamaye said NYSC extended her service year by two months. Officials claimed she failed to report for biometric clearance in April 2025.</p>

<p>She denies this claim. According to her, she presented herself for clearance on <strong>April 7, 2025</strong>, but <strong>Local Government Inspector Veronica Abela refused to screen her</strong>.</p>

<p>Her lawyer added that this denial came shortly after she criticised government policies, describing it as <strong>targeted harassment</strong>.</p>

<p>The petition also states that the <strong>Lagos State NYSC Coordinator</strong> threatened to extend her service year. Soon after, the extension was carried out.</p>

<p>On <strong>August 11, 2025</strong>, she filed a petition to the <strong>NYSC Director-General</strong> asking for a review. She has not received a response.</p>

<p>Human rights lawyer <strong>Inibehe Effiong</strong> said the NYSC’s action violated Uguamaye’s constitutional rights to free expression and fair hearing.</p>

<p>He urged President Tinubu to act quickly. He also noted that the silence of NYSC leadership suggests approval of political retaliation.</p>
